Kittens Being Killed, Donations Needed

Published by admin under Cats,Dogs

We are in dire need of donations to stop the absurd killing of 9 kittens at Tylers Truck Stop in Rockport, Indiana. The new owner of the Tylers Truck Stop has been killing some feral cats and kittens around the station so we need to catch them, spay/neuter them and have them vetted.  The cost will probably be around 650.00. So far we have raised $300.00 towards this effort and we also have a volunteer to trap them. We still need more funds though to vet them. Please help us out. These defenseless, beautiful kittens do not deserve to be shot. If you can spare just $5.00, please help us today. We have  a donate button on our page for Paypal, or you can mail checks directly to us. Thank you for your support.

Avoiding Diabetes in Your Cats

Published by admin under Cats

What is best for your cat, wet or dry food? Which food is best for your cat?

There is no simple answer as to what to feed your cat, unless it requires a special dietary need medically. For the average, healthy cat though, a diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates will best serve your cats health needs.

By nature cats are carnivores. They require high protein foods, and while protein can also be found in soy, vegetable and cereals, this is not the kind of protein that your cat needs. They need meat based proteins such as chicken, turkey, fish and lamb. They require 2 to 3 times the protein that omnivores, such as dogs or humans need.

Cats bodies are formulated for metabolizing animal fats and low carbs. Animals proteins are important to a cat because they contain complete amino acids which are essential to a cats health.

Though carbs are a good energy source, cats do not use them well as an energy source. Their bodies are in need to steadily release glucose which they get from the protein. Fats such as omega 6 and omega 3, help cats absorb fat soluble vitamins and give them energy. It is also important for them to get other minerals as well as phosphorous and calcium.

Feeding a very low carb, high protein diet can help protect your cat from diabetes, especially in their later years. Many cats however will develop diabetes strictly from their diet of too many carbs and grains. Canned food will usually be higher in protein than dry, and lower in carbs, however, some cats do not like canned food. Be sure to always have plenty of water down for dry cat food eaters since dry food only contains about 10% water as compared to 75% in wet foods.

Feeding your cat twice a day should be adequate as free feeding can lead to obesity, which in turn can lead to diabetes.

Read the labels carefully and talk to your vet about which food is best for your cat.

Buying Pets as a Christmas Present

Published by admin under Cats,Dogs

You love dogs and cats, I love dogs and cats, but what about that person you are adopting or buying a pet for. Do they really want one? If they did, do they want you to pick it out for them?

A lot of people love pets, but they just don’t want to be tied down to one, or don’t have the money to take care of its veterinary bills, food, and all the expense that goes along with it. As nice as it may seem to you to adopt a pet for someone else, we’ve found the shelters become overloaded after the holidays with pets that people really didn’t want as a gift.

Adopting or purchasing a pet as a gift is really not a good idea. If you think someone wants a pet, instead, make a day of it. Take them to lunch and then to the shelter or rescue and let them pick out a pet of their own. What you deem to be a good fit may not be. Plus, its so much more exciting picking out your own pet then someone else picking it out for you.

Remember too, there are so many rescues that need you to adopt from them instead of purchasing from a breeder.

Another good option is to make a donation to a rescue or shelter in the recipients name instead of getting them an actual pet, or sponsoring a pet in their name.

Make this a Merry Christmas for the shelter animals too.

Summer Heat Tips For A Safe Healthy Pet

Published by admin under Uncategorized

Help your pets beat the summer heat.

For outside pets, make sure they always have a shady area. Not just an area where when the sun is at certain point they will have some shade. It has to be a consistently shady area. Also, make sure they always have plenty of cool water. Loading their bowls up with ice cubes is a good way to ensure that the water will stay cool. Make sure that their food and water bowls are also in a shaded area and not crawling with ants. Pets can become dehydrated very easily. For indoor pets, make sure they too also have access to plenty of water. Just because they are inside does not mean that they can’t dehydrate from going in and out to potty.

Giving your dog a summer haircut can also help keep them cooler. Take precaution though for both inside and outside pets that they do not get sunburned, especially if you are boating with your dog or playing on the beach. If you use sunscreen on your pet, make sure it is labeled safe for pets. For cats, a good brushing to get rid of excess fur is recommended.

Never leave your pet in a parked car with the a/c off. It can reach temperatures of over 100 degrees in minutes. In some states it’s illegal to leave a pet in a parked car.

Know the signs of heat stroke in your pet. Heaving panting, drooling, collapse, stupor, mild weakness, increase heart and respiratory rate are all symptoms of possible heat stroke. Elevated temps over 104 degrees, vomiting and diarrhea are also symptoms. Animals with flat faces such as pugs or Persian cats are even more susceptible to heat stroke so be especially cautious with them.

If you leave your windows open in your house and your cats like to lay there, be sure that your screens are securely in place so they don’t fall out the window. Do not leave open unscreened windows.

Walking your dog is good exercise, but again, in the summer, precautions need to be taken. First off, is the asphalt or concrete too hot on your pet’s feet? They can burn the pads. Also, you might want to think about lessening the walk time so your pet doesn’t get overheated, and slow down the pace in hot weather. Since your pet is closer to the hot ground, they do heat up quicker than you do.

Last, be careful of those lawn chemicals you are using. Do not walk your dog on any areas that are newly sprayed. Keep all your chemicals tightly sealed and out of the way of pets. If you think your pet may have got into something poisonous, call the ASPCA animal poison control center at 888-426-4435. Keep this number handy at all times.
